Things to consider before ordering custom art

So you’re considering commissioning an artist to create a piece of art for you? That's awesome! There are a few things you need to consider before getting started to make sure the process is smooth, timely, and you aren’t charged for having to start over if you’re not happy with the direction of the piece.

Here’s my list of things to have in mind and answers ready to have a wonderful custom work experience!

  1. Know how you’d like your subject portrayed.

Is there a certain pose or angle that is the most flattering to your subject? Is there anything in a reference photo that needs changing (if someone blinked, add flowers to a winter reference photo). Do your reference photos cover all details that are to be painted? If you send a head only photo of your pet and ask for full body pose, how am I to know the tail is poofy and his toes are white? Photos give me all the answers! It's totally fine for you to send me a few photos and have me pick the angle that I would look best painted, but you have to be OK with the one I pick! As part of the process, you’ll see a draft how it looks before painting, but each pose or angle you want me to sketch is a separate drawing fee. So if you have a favorite reference photo or specific vision, please instruct!

  2. Know how the piece will be used

This is really important to know to make sure we pick the right size for your piece. Will it be a focal point on the wall? Go big and matted. Want it on a gallery wall? Medium unmatted or small matted. Will it go on a desk or a cubicle? Smaller sizes are best.

Are there certain color considerations to make sure it's cohesive with the room decor or surroundings?

If your painting is a gift, 8x10 is the safest size and the recipient's favorite color or what color you see them wearing most is always a good idea!

  3. Have a deadline

Custom art can take up to 3 weeks from purchase to delivery (or even longer for poster sized pieces), so please know your need by date. It may be longer for major holidays and gift giving seasons. This may need to be a week or two before the occasion to accommodate time for you find a frame, ship, wrap, or whatever is applicable for your gift giving plans.

I hope these items are helpful as you’re considering and planning your custom art portrait. I have painted so many wonderful pieces and these are the questions I get asked and ask the clients in return, so I hope this is a helpful guide for you!

What other questions do you have? Always happy to dispel myths and put any fears or apprehensions at ease!
